What to do with the quiet (Copy)
If you’re not taking time off this summer but your clients are, what do you do with the quiet?
The instinct is to fill your time, more content, more outreach and more... well, doing! This is psychological, stillness feels uncomfortable when you’re used to being busy.
But the summer lull is actually one of the most useful windows of the year because it gives you breathing space, and time, to look at things a little more closely. When you have back-to-back appointments, admin piling up, bookings coming in and you’re trying to keep on top of your social media, there’s not much space to ask: is this working as well as it could be?
Things may be getting done but are the right things getting done in the right way, without it costing more time and energy than it needs to.
Here are three things worth looking at honestly.
What keeps pulling your attention?
When you’re busy you deal with issues and crack on, then it happens again… and again… and again.
The lull is a good time to look at this pattern. You don’t have to accept that this thing will always happen. When you think back over the last 6 months, what is the one issue that keeps popping up?
Maybe appointment reminders going out late or not at all.
Rebooking falling through the gap.
Stock running low before you’ve noticed.
There’s usually a foundational reason why it keeps happening, it could be a missing process, something never properly set up, something you’ve been meaning to sort since January, have a good look at where the work sticks or where the customer journey keeps breaking.
A few hours now can save a lot of frustration later.
Check your software for automations you’re not using.
Most of us are paying for tools that do more than we realise. When did you last look at yours properly?
A lot of the repetitive work - like client onboarding and intake forms, reminders, follow ups, status updates - can all be automated, saving you time and headspace.
It won’t take as long as you think, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
Do the thing you’ve been putting off
We all have that one thing we’ve been putting off.
The conversation you keep rescheduling, the brand messaging tweaks, outreach to new clients, clearing out the email list.
These things don’t get any easier. In fact, the longer you leave them, the harder they’ll be and they just sit there, niggling away and adding to your cognitive load.
What do you want September to feel like?
Autumn brings a surge. Clients return, enquiries pick up, the pace increases. Making improvements before that happens can make a real difference to how you and your clients experience working together.
This is about using the quiet to look clearly, decide intentionally, and walk into September with something stronger than you left June with.
